Fire Pits: Gas vs. Wood

I love to see the new direction that outdoor living spaces are taking. All the additional fixtures and elements available make creating these spaces a more interesting and rewarding business to be involved in.

One feature that is captivating to me is gas powered fire pits. As a fan of wood burning fires I was initially skeptical. Well after years of installing natural gas fire pits I have realized the pro and cons of both.

While wood burning fire pits are great, the setting has to be ideal. Gas powered fire pits can be excellent but there are limitations.

Wood Burning Fire Pits

PRO’s
Bigger fires, entertainment by involvement (everyone loves to throw another log on the fire), they are affordable, enhanced ambiance but at a cost (time, effort)

CON’s
The smell sticks to clothing, time consuming for starting a fire but also for cleaning up after the fire and fun has ended, smoke can create an uncomfortable situation

Gas Powered Fire Pits

PRO’s
Quick start and stop (at the flip of a switch), clean operating conditions, adds a relax ambiance with no additional effort. Odorless and smokeless.

CON’s
Smaller more controlled fires, village/city ordnance restrictions, cost prohibitive (although prices are much affordable now, as low as $1295).

I hope that my non-bias review helps you to decide which direction is right for you. If you want my opinion, gas powered fire pits have my vote. It just seems like a better investment of space. I mean, how often is it that you have time to gather wood, start fire and clean up.

“We use it 2 or 3 times a week, even in the hot summer nights, we just keep it turned down. My kids love the ambiance.” – Kyle M. Shaumburg, IL.
